Evia

But add a captivating coastline, plenty of Roman ruins, old buildings, secluded beaches, and a wide choice of lively tavernas, and you have the perfect holiday ingredients.

The walks traverse lush valleys with old stone bridges fording streams, watermills and fountains. The walk to the Dimosaris Gorge ends at the village of Kalliani. Like Kea, you can get the ferry here from Athens. The capital, Karystos, overlooks the Aegean Sea and the Cycladic Islands in the south. Roman aqueducts, Byzantine churches and Frankish castles are interspersed with olive and fruit groves, vineyards and cypress trees and deserted beaches and coves are perfect for swimming and snorkelling.

Kalymnos

Mountainous and picturesque Kalymnos, set between the islands of Leros and Kos in the Dodecanese, is renown for its sponge divers. It is a beautiful Greek island and way less touristic than its neighbour Kos, since it’s black-sand beaches are not as attractive for swimmers. For nightlife head for Masouri, but at Vathi, a haunt of yachties, you can dine on fresh seafood and afterwards dive into crystal clear water from the little jetty. You can reach Kalymnos by ferry from Peiraias.

Karpathos

The Aegean Dodecanese Islands, of which Karpathos is the pick, has a wild, natural beauty in the north, and is tamed and tranquil in the south. Sharp mountains, uncrowded beaches and tracks ideal for hiking make Karpathos the perfect Greek holiday experience, only without the hordes. The village of Olymbos has distinctive windmills that produce flour, while the surrounding countryside grows olives, grains, fruits, vegetables, and grapes that produce a distinctive local wine. Nisyros

Now the dessert is plainly called “Il dolce” and as always, it’s mostly sweets. There are a wide variety of desserts served in Italian restaurants but most of it is made of custard.

For the uninitiated to the world of serviced apartments, let me explain what a serviced apartment is.

Serviced Apartment

A flat that has a separate bedroom, living room, fully-equipped kitchen, bathroom and can be rented for short stays from 1 night to 3 months or even longer. There are hotel benefits such as a maid service, reception.

What is a standalone apartment?

This is a term I have coined to try and differentiate between apart’otels and apartments. Standalone apartments are serviced apartments ran by a small team within a block of flat. Staying in these apartments, you will enjoy maid service, reception help, but no Room Service or Health Club. A number of the standalone apartments’ team work Monday to Friday 9:00-5:00pm, so anyone checking in outside of these hours will need to pick up their keys to the apartment at another location.

What is an apart’otel?

Apartments within this category also enjoy all the benefits of the standalone apartment such as maid service. The main difference is that these apartments are managed by hotels and are either located within one (usually on top floors) or just external to the hotel.

Guests staying an apart’otel can enjoy the privacy and independence of their apartment and the hotel services such as Room Service, 5pm and restaurants…all for a charge.

Apart’otels are opened 24 hours, so checking in at any time of the day is easy. Payment for the apartments are usually upon check-in.

So which one is better? Standalone apartments or Apart’otels?

The answer is: that depends on your needs.
Apart’otels in London are best if you are:

1. Staying for 1-2 nights
2. Arriving outside of office hours and want to check-in at the apartment and not at another location
3. Wishing to pay for the apartment upon check-in and not prior to arrival

           Marlin Lodge Benguerra Island Mozambique

When you make the decision to go to Marlin Lodge Benguerra Island, Bazaruto Archipelago, Mozambique, be careful who you tell, because most people still think it is unsafe, and those folk who know anything at all about Mozambique will probably never speak to you again.

You fly into Vilanculos, which is about two hours from Johannesburg with Pelican Air, and it is possible to coincide flight times coming in from Europe on an international flight.

The boat to Marlin Lodge arrives off the beach so it’s a wade to get on board, but the journey is a delight as you are taken to Benguerra Island  that could truly be described as being in the middle of nowhere.

The short journey is at speed, but not so quick you couldn’t take in the colors, turquoise, aquamarine, sapphire, contrasting with the stunning white sandbanks.

The first thing that struck me on arrival was how warm the water was as I waded ashore, and arrival we had become used to in Zanzibar on a previous trip – no jetty  here either!!

We had a luxury chalet which was gorgeous, and it had its own private walkway to the beach.

All toiletries are provided in big bottles and so you don't need to take your own

The staff were terrific, and in an unobtrusive way, giving us excellent service.

In so far as activities are concerned, some people went scuba diving, others went fishing, some like us did virtually nothing but unwind with a bit of snorkelling thrown in, and exploring too.

Whilst it is more a place for honeymooners than families, there is water skiing, and banana boat rides too

All in all it was everything we had hoped for, and I'd certainly recommend it.

It was quite superb - the food, especially if you like seafood, although if you wanted something else that didn’t seem to be a problem,  the location, the service and people were all terrific

I can't recommend it enough!

It was a perfect place to relax and unwind.

Something too few tourists will ask before coming to Guanajuato, Mexico, for a visit is, “Can I use my ATM and credit card for everything or anything?” I have seen many a display of the Ugly American Syndrome in many restaurants and shops over this very issue.

So, to avoid the temptation of reinforcing the Ugly American Syndrome stereotype here in Guanajuato, let’s have a go at this topic.

The truth is that while you might be able to use your credit card in most of the typical tourist resort areas, I would not count on being able to use it here in Guanajuato. In some of the bigger, two-hundred-dollar a night hotels in this Colonial Mexican town, you can use your credit card. The hotels that have restaurants will usually take your credit card. However, outside the confines of your hotel, I wouldn’t bet the farm on being able to use your card.

The automatic teller machines are plentiful in Guanajauto and will dispense the local currency. You can get cash with different limits depending on the local bank. One of the banks will not dispense more than $3,000 pesos a day while others will dispense almost three times that amount.

There will be fees involved. Before traveling to Guanajuato, you need to check with the bank that issued your credit or ATM card to see what fees they charge. Some will charge for the use of foreign ATM or those outside their network. Make sure you tell them that you are going to be in Mexico and ask if your PIN will work in Mexico (some don’t work outside the USA). I would even go to your bank and talk with someone in person rather than call on the phone.

Banks in Mexico charge a fee for you to use their ATMs. So, you are going to have fees upon fees. Be sure you know this ahead of time to prevent yourself from going into shock. Currently, we are charged about 75 cents for using our American ATM card here in Mexico. We keep accounts in both the U.S. and Mexico.

You will be charged extra fees at any Mexican ATM. There is no avoiding it so be prepared and do not let something like this ruin your trip. You might be able to find banks in the U.S. that do not charge a fee for using an “alien” ATM in another country. Check around but this might be more of a hassle than it is worth.

Try to ask around to see what local Guanajuato banks will permit the biggest ATM withdrawls. Then, to avoid too many ATM fees, take out the maximum amount of pesos you can each day. This will keep you from incurring ATM fees each day.

In the state in which I live, but so far not in my city, there have been some ATM thieves that attach a false computer front to the ATM machine. It will have a slide mechanism for your card. Local merchants, and there are very few, that do accept credit cards, seem very nervous when completing a transaction. This could be for several reasons. I always pay for everything in cash so as to avoid hassles. Even travelers checks are rarely accepted in the city. With your passport, you can go to most banks to cash these. But the banks have certain hours that they do this, so check before you get too low on cash.

A lot of gringos who want to see more of Mexico than the beach resorts have a difficult time adjusting to the differences. This credit and ATM card business seems radically different than it is in the coastal resorts. Too many fly into the costal resorts, spend a little time, then bus from the coast to central Mexico where one finds a different kind of tourism.

If the coastal areas take your credit card without a hitch, do not expect that in central Mexico. It is almost entirely a cash based society here. Pay with cash. It is so safe here compared with the resorts that you can walk around with larger sums of money than in other areas.

I’ve been in line in the bank when men, women, and children, yes kids, withdraw large sums of pesos. They fold it up, put it in a pocket or purse. They’re done.

Seaport Village is perhaps my favorite shopping center in San Diego. I don’t go there often, and it doesn’t have the major department stores, but if you enjoy unique and quirky shops, this is the shopping center for you.

My personal favorite has always been the Lefty Shop. I’m right handed, and they mostly sell tools for lefties, but they have things anyone can enjoy. I love my “counter clock” I bought there. Look at a regular clock in a mirror, and that’s what my clock looks like. The double takes that clock gets is simply classic.

The combination of shopping, park, entertainment and waterfront really makes Seaport Village stand out. Many shops are more geared toward tourists than locals, but there’s plenty for locals to enjoy.

At various times, you can sit back and enjoy live music. Sometimes you’ll even see people dancing to the music as the band plays.

You’ll find a wonderful kite shop, art galleries and other unique stores with merchandise you just won’t find many other places. That’s the real fun of Seaport Village - the uniqueness of the shopping experience.

Done shopping? Walk on over to the park and watch the kites fly. Take advantage of the kite shop beforehand and you can join the crowd.

The food ranges from cookies to burgers to serious dining. I often just stop for a burger and fries, watching out for the ever present and hungry pigeons. It's also fun to sit on the wall and look out across the water.

Harbour Town Golf Links, developed in 1970 by Pete Dye and Jack Nicklaus, is and has been home to the PGA’s Verizon Heritage Classic since 1969, when it was first won by Arnold Palmer. Among the many features of this famous course is its photogenic 18th hole, with Harbour Town’s Lighthouse in the background. Noted for excellence in design and playing potential, the par-71 Harbour Town Golf Links has been ranked highly among the country’s finest golf courses by multiple magazines since 1971.

Forest Preserve

When Charles Fraser began developing Sea Pines in the early ‘50s, he concentrated on keeping the island’s abundance of natural beauty as untouched as possible. To this day Sea Pines’ Forest Preserve covers approximately 605 acres, home to diverse flora and fauna including over 200 species of critters as well as lagoons and salt marshes. Here you will find a Wildflower Meadow, a thousand-foot-long boardwalk, the Low Ropes Team Building Course, and miles of bike trails and walking paths. Even fishing is allowed, albeit with the correct permit.

Are you a history fanatic? Sea Pines Plantation Forest Preserve has its share of historic landmarks. The 4,000-year-old Indian Shell Ring, for example, is believed to have been constructed around 1450 B. C. A circle of shells and bones piled several feet high, it is one of only twenty shell rings still in existence. Those responsible for its assembly are also believed to have invented pottery here, in North America.

The Stoney-Baynard ruins, once an 18th century plantation house, are now open for tours. The property is covered with oyster shells and its architecture includes porthole-shaped windows.

The Oktoberfest in Munich, also called Wies’n (meaning “meadow”) by the locals, is the largest festival in the world. Although there are many imitations of this huge beer party, none of them will manage to reach the dimensions of the original Wies’n in Munich that is carried out each year in late September and early October. It attracts as many as 6,000,000 visitors and about 6,000,000 liters of beer as well as an enormous amount of grilled chickens, sausages and pretzels are consumed yearly.

These statistics may seem overwhelming for anyone with a dislike of crowds but the Oktoberfest is such an enormous event that everyone should experience this festival at least once in their lives. Miss the Oktoberfest and you will you will miss a major experience and maybe a lot of fun as well. To make the most of your trip to the Oktoberfest, it is worth planning in advance and there are some essential things you should know and prepare for when you go there for the first time.

The Oktoberfest was first held in 1810 when Crown Prince Ludwig (later King Ludwig I) of Bavaria married Princess Therese of Saxony-Hildburghausen. The marriage took place on October 12th, 1810, and on October 17th, a large horse race was organised. The event was repeated and in 1819, it was decided by the city council that the festival would take place every year, no matter what the circumstances. Since then it has been carried out every year at the Theresienwiese, named after "Therese" of Saxony-Hildburghausen, in Munich for two weeks in late September and early October.

The preparation for the Oktoberfest starts about two months before the festivities are opened. Six Munich breweries and about eighty showmen set up their beer halls and various attractions such as ghost trains, roller coasters and a variety of fairground rides.

Don’t be surprised to see a real city with its own infrastructure like streets, toilets, police, post office, first-aid station and even its own sewage system. Hundreds of people are employed every year just to work there. The Oktoberfest boosts not only tourism but also has a major impact on the economy of Munich.

Due to the popularity and scale of the Oktoberfest, it is highly recommended to book your flight and your hotel well in advance and a few months will certainly be much too short. Prices for flights and hotels usually skyrocket during the time of the Oktoberfest. The same applies if you want to sit in one of the large beer halls, most of which are in one of the main roads also referred to as “Bierzeltstrasse” (beer-hall road). Although the beer halls are really huge compared to ordinary beer tents, the places are already booked even one year in advance and it will be difficult to enter one of them without a reservation. You will probably be luckier in finding a seat outside in a beergarden which most beer halls have. This may be the better option as the beer halls can get very stuffy, hot and loud.

The best way to get to the Wies’n is to go there on foot. It is about 15 minutes away from Munich’s main Hauptbahnhof station and is easy to find. In most cases you don’t even have to ask someone, you only have to follow the crowds. Another way of getting there is by underground: use lines no. 4 or 5 and get off at “Theresienwiese” or no. 3 or 6 and get off at “Goetheplatz”. When you use the first option, you will be directly on the Wies’n when you leave the underground, from Goetheplatz you will have to walk a few meters. Tram no. 19 also stops near the Oktoberfest. It is not advisable to use your private car or bike as you will not find a place to park your car. If you come by bike, be sure to leave it somewhere safe but this can be difficult as vandalism by drunkards is quite common.

Another consideration is to be aware of pickpockets by taking care of your belongings. When you use one of the fairground rides (which is better done before drinking beer and eating), it is best to have your money safely in the closed pocket of your trousers – otherwise you might just lose it.

Beer is drunk in large and heavy 1-liter mugs. It is hard to get the usual portion of ½ liter but if you are lucky, you might be able to order ½ liter of Weiكbier (“eine Halbe Weiكbier”) but this is not the usual thing. The Oktoberfest beer is a special kind of beer that is stronger than the ordinary beer so beware. When you are not used to drinking, even one of these 1-liter mugs with this strong Oktoberfest brew might be too much! Not only beer, but everything is quite expensive on the Wies’n compared to normal prices.

Although there are many toilets in the Oktoberfest mainly in the side streets next to the beer tents, you will probably have to queue up for quite a while. This causes many drunkards to pee directly on a meadow (they call it “wild peeing”) and is not something to be recommended as you will be charged if caught by one of the many policemen that are around. So, don’t be shocked when you see people peeing out in the open or lying drunk on the meadow near the main entrance.

Things become worse as the evening progresses and it is important to keep your distance when you see aggressive drunkards with large beer mugs as it can be quite dangerous to be hit by one of them. For many, the best option is to go to the Oktoberfest quite early or even better, during the week. The same applies if you want to attend one of the many popular events held on the first weekend as you have to arrive very early to see something.

On the first Saturday at 10.45 a.m., there is a march of the Oktoberfest innkeepers to the Wies'n with their brewery horses lead by the Münchner Kindl and the Major of Munich. Its route is from Sonnenstrasse via Schwanthalerstrasse to the Theresienwiese. At midday, the Major of Munich taps the first barrel of beer in the beer hall Schottenhammel. On the first Sunday, there is large parade of traditional costumes and riflemen to the Wies'n that starts at 11.00 a.m. at the Siegestor in Ludwigstrasse in Schwabing.

If you keep in mind everything mentioned here and are even lucky with the weather, you will have a great time at the Oktoberfest. Just watch the people (many of them being dressed in traditional costumes), enjoy the Oktoberfest beer and have a good time!
